The Preparation for Oddinary: Stay's Perspective

How can we, as Stays, make Oddinary the biggest and most successful comeback of Stray Kids? How can we possibly surpass our biggest achievements? How can we make Stray Kids’ world domination actually happen? Here’s a breakdown of information that can help us achieve that.

On February 16, 2022, a survey about Oddinary and Stays was opened in anticipation for Stray Kid's upcoming comeback on March 18, 2022. The survey was able to have 1,633 respondents within 3 days and was closed on February 19, 2022. In this article, the data from the survey will be summarized including suggestions and questions of Stays all over the world.

LIMITATIONS: It should be noted that the survey had limitations specifically the following: 1) Due to the fact that Stay Info only had an account in twitter, most of the respondents are twitter users. 2) The country choices were limited. These limitations will be considered for future surveys’ improvement.

DISCLAIMER: The requests mentioned may already have been done, is currently being done, or will be done. The author is only bringing light to Stays’ comments.

Stray Kids Everywhere All Around the World

Figure 1

Based on the data, there are Stays in at least 55 countries all over the world. It should be noted the country choices in the survey were numbered and the excess were counted in continental choices therefore the data acquired is limited. The country with the most Stays is the United States taking at least 14.3% of the overall population of Stays. Philippines comes close with 12.9%. The top 5 countries with the most Stays are:

  1. United States (14.3%)

  2. Philippines (12.9%)

  3. Indonesia (5.6%)

  4. Malaysia (5.1%)

  5. United Kingdom (4.3%)

This is relevant to knowing which countries can be allocated or combined in streaming projects or parties, if there are any. This is also relevant to know the overall accessibility of Oddinary to different countries since some do not have direct accessible shops in their country.

Figure 1.a

The chart above indicates that Stays who live in Asia have the most impact in a comeback, overall. This chart can also be useful in assigning Stays’ teams if there is another streaming battle like the previous Thunderous Streaming Battle between Team Cheese and Team Domino.

Time is Money

Figure 2

Based on the survey, Stays are most active at 9pm up to 12 pm kst. This can be the most viable time to hold global streaming parties or events. Stay’s activity holds a trough at 6 am kst indicating that the streams at this time might also be the lowest per day. From 6 am to 3pm kst, there is only a slight increase in Stay’s activity. This can be Stay’s room for improvement. Countries or areas who are active at that time can hold their own streaming parties to bring the streams‘ decrease to the minimum. One of the requests from Stays is to hold 24/7 streaming parties. Stays from countries all over the world can have their own streaming parties taking turns one after the other then everyone can be brought together by 2 or 3 global streaming parties everyday. The request of separate countries’ streaming parties is also due to Stays’ availability and time zones.

Time can also be crucial in disseminating important information like mass voting, schedules, etc.

Stays Across Platforms

Figure 3

The respondents of the survey are mostly twitter Stays therefore the results are skewed towards them. Taking that in consideration, Instagram is one of the most used platforms by Stays followed by Tiktok, Vlive, and Facebook. Stays on Platforms will be discussed further on Unity of Stays and Dissemination of Information Across Platforms.

Where Stays Stream

Figure 4

According to the survey, 97% of Stays stream on YouTube. We have the numbers. We just need consistency to be able to reach our goals. Spotify comes close with 83%. As Spotify is the biggest free and paid streaming service in the world, this is expected. Shazam and Apple Music are at a low level. This is due to the fact that these platforms need the songs to be bought. This can be improved when more Stays participate in projects. Unfortunately, only 14% of Stays stream on Korean music platforms. Digitals has been Stay’s weakness for a long time. Although there has been substantial growth in the last 2 years, there is still a massive room for improvement specially now that we will be up against lots of DigiMons. The best thing to do is enlighten Stays. Many Stays in the comments expressed their interest in using Korean music platforms but they are confused or lacking knowledge and some are willing but lack the funds to do so. This will be discussed further in the Stay’s Donations, Passes, and Projects Projects section.

Oddinary Purchase Tracker

Figure 5

Most of Stays have bought and will be buying the album. Based on the percentage, we can assume that we have the number and it is most likely that the struggle will be the shipping. This has been one of the problems in the past.

Figure 6

It should be noted that this information is not entirely accurate due to the constant rise of sales everyday and this only reflects information up to February 19, 2022. We can assume that there have been changes but through this graph, we have the general picture of where Stays bought Oddinary. The top shops where Stays bought Oddinary are Stray Kids Shop and Synnara.

Figure 6.1

Through the shops indicated in Figure 6, we were able to determine the portion of sales that is counted towards the three charts. It should be noted that conservatism was practiced in the computation meaning the undeterminable shops were not counted. The bulk of the sales count toward Gaon and only 27% of sales count toward Billboard. Data for Billboard‘s sales charts, which include all album charts are compiled by MRC Data from a universe of retailers that represents more than 90% of the U.S. music retail market. Therefore, to be able to finally fulfill Stays’ goal of Stray Kids fully charting on Billboard, a constant recommendation to Stays specially US Stays who comprise 14.3% of Stays to buy through shops that count towards Billboard should be done.

Voting Apps

Figure 7

Only 63.7% of Stays have installed all the voting apps required for the comeback.

Figure 7.1

25% of Stays are knowledgeable of how to vote only on some music show apps and 8.2% are completely not knowledgeable on voting on music show apps. Stays are admittedly good at last minute voting. We should avoid resorting to this and secure first place as early as we can.

Donations, Passes, and Projects

Figure 8

24.6% of Stays can afford passes or donations to streaming projects. In the question portion of the survey, many Stays asked about passes. They wanted to know where and how to buy a pass and they also wanted to know the prices. Most information that is spread around are about downloading and using Korean music platforms and about donating.

Figure 8.1

78.5% of Stays are willing and able to participate in streaming projects. Even though only 24.6% of Stays can afford passes and donations, through maximization of resources, delegation of responsibility, and proper dissemination of information, we can and we will be able to chart on music platforms and reach our goals in streaming.

Stays’ Streaming Knowledge

Figure 9

One of the biggest misconceptions in Korean streaming services or digitals is that only K-Stays can use it. 19% of Stays do not know that they can stream on Korean platforms too. Due to this, Stays should constantly be informed and reminded of such mentioned fact. If the 19% was able to stream or participate in streaming projects in Korean music platforms, this might give Stray Kids’ digitals a massive boost.

Figure 9.1

Although 80.4% of Stays is already a good starting point for Stays, the remaining amount can still give the music video a bigger impact. Stays are still confused on which guides to believe. Some said ads should not be skipped but some said skipping wouldn’t affect the views. This should be clarified as it could be crucial to the number of views and time of streaming.

When Stays Joined the Fandom

Figure 9.1

The year when Stays joined the fandom has a strong probability of affecting their knowledge and experience in Stray Kids’ comebacks. For 2017 to 2019 Stays who comprise 36% of the fandom, we can assume that they already have sufficient knowledge. They already know what to do when common difficulties arise. For 2021, there was only one Korean comeback and Stays from this era might lack needed information. The fandom should continue to keep an open mind and lend their knowledge to those Stays who seek it. There are always Stays who have questions.

Stay’s Suggestion

The Stay Promo

There will always be a hit tweet in a Stay’s timeline. It might be about theories on Stray Kids’ latest storyline or a simple funny tweet that moves Stays to tears. Some tweets even reach up to 20,000 likes. In Tiktok, Stays’ edits garner attention from Stays and non-Stays alike. Comments asking about Stray Kids are often seen. In Instagram, there are hundreds and thousands of fanpages that constantly get hundreds and thousands of likes just by posting a single picture of Stray Kids. In Vlive, per second, there is a post added by Stays in Stray Kids’ board. Even on Youtube, Stays’ videos get a considerable number of views. Engagement on Stays’ post across all platforms have been rising. This can be one of our biggest advantages. One of the requests of Stays is to have a format that they can copy and paste under the replies that includes important information. Some already do this on twitter but not that much on other platforms. The classic line “Stray Kids will have a comeback…” works and important links should be included.

One Stay suggested “Make a team/groupchat that will comment in a Stay Hit tweets such as from levanterdiary, seungdduk vlive tweets, and many more. Those lovely accounts posts bbl contents as well as Vlive translations which majority of stays like that sometimes it really reaches 10-20k likes comparing to a fanbase. The higher the likes, the higher engagement that it has; therefore, tons of accounts may see the post and guides that they cannot see from fanbase tweets that gains 2-5k likes in every post. It’s understandable that they will not insert the comeback guides link in their posts, but we as a fan can still do more wonders. Every one of us can have a role in the fandom that can help everyone even if it is deemed as a small thing.”

Hype it Up

Stays are skilled and talented. There are so many beautiful photo and video edits that impress even non-Stays. If we’re able to harness Stays’ creativity into hyping the comeback then it will surely be a great benefit. It has been done before. One Stay even mentioned having a video trailer to hype everyone up.

Trends, fanarts, video edits, tiktoks, endless memes, theories. Make Stays and non-Stays interested. Get their attention. Make it a trend. These things can make the smallest but also biggest impact. Christmas Evel is the proof of this. Its rise was unexpected as it became a viral trend that even made celebrities use the audio on tiktok.

Make it Fun and Be Positive

Comebacks are fulfilling but it can also be draining. Stays will be spending their hours attending to multiple devices as they stream, watching the charts vigorously, voting on music show apps, etc. Here are some comments that can help make it light and fun.

  • “For music show wins, badges were made last time which were great. Totally old school and love it. One idea to have individual single member pictures with or without trophy with dates and win In a well edited photo collage at the end would be amazing”

  • “Give options like Stayville competitions or like those unlock missions that like get to 1m views and something is unlocked because Stays are kind of like children when it comes to being entertained like you can tell games or things that bring like the timeline together really helps Stayville work efficiently.”

  • “Comebacks are supposed to be FUN! I think we're motivated best when it comes from a positive, encouraging place. When our fanbases set that tone, it helps a lot.”

  • “I think doing things a bit “child like’ for Stays to move works. Just like the Kangaroo mission for MAMA. You get Stays’ attention when you show interesting things.”

Stays also expressed their sentiment about wanting the fandom to avoid negativities. Stays prefer positive reinforcement rather than being guilted or forced into doing what needs to be done. Engaging with hate and antis should also be avoided at all cost. It only distracts Stays from the goal.

Unity of Stays and Dissemination of Information Across Platforms

This may be the most crucial and most helpful suggestion. There are active Stays on all platforms but relevant information does not reach all. There has also been a division in the past of Stays on different platforms and this should be eliminated. We should consider the nature and presence of Stays in these platforms. In twitter, there is a strong presence of (1) fanbases and Stays in general. There are fanbases with a follower count of over 100,000. One even surpasses 300,000. The fanbases are organized and this often pushes Stays to be more informed and efficient. The fanbases readily supply the fandom with the right instructions when needed. In Instagram, fanbases have less followers but fan pages that only posts pictures and little to no relevant information are greatly followed peaking at an account with has more than 600,000 followers. In Tiktok, there is only a small presence of fanbases but there are a lot of tiktoks made by Stays that reaches hundreds of thousands of views and some, millions. If the information could extend to Stays that are unaware on different apps and websites then it could greatly change the outcome of the comeback. Although fanbases have been building their followings on various platforms, most are still quite small. The already existing popular Stay pages or accounts may be the solution. Mass messaging these accounts and suggesting to them to share the votings, schedules, and instructions if they are willing could help. Informing other Stays by commenting under popular fanpages’ posts could work too. A stay also suggested collaboration of fanbases on different platforms.

1 Fanbase in this narrative means organized accounts managed by one or more Stays. They post updates, instructions, and other relevant information in helping Stray Kids and Stay.

At the end of the day, it all comes back to why and for who Stays are doing what we do. The reason is Stray Kids and their music. Stays should never forget that comebacks are fun. It’s the peak of release of contents that we all have been waiting for. It’s the time Stays witness everything the kids have worked so hard for. It’s the only time we can watch the kids do what they love everyday. Let’s work together, enjoy this comeback, and let’s reach all our goals while doing so.
